CAD spoked rims or Stainless.
« on: September 11, 2012, 04:36:06 AM »
Hi guys,

Getting my rims anodised and same with my hubs, and CAD spoked rims were the recommended spoke to go with. Have any people had problems with them, and are they a good choice of spoke to go with. The other choice is stainless steel, just not sure which one will look better and last longer.

If anyone has any pics, of the CAD or stainless and want to post that'd be great.

Thanks

Who recommended cad plated over stainless and why? Cad plating can come off and then you have bare steel, stainless won't rust  :D

Hoey racing in Australia - Adelaide.

Seems as though they may be the cheaper option, I suppose if you maintain them and don't give them the opportunity to rust they will last.

If cost is a factor cad would be just fine. Like you said, with proper care and feeding they can out live you  ;D

always ask which type of stainless?

304 will be the cheap nasty option as it will go a dull oxidised color (like weathers aluminum) after a few years.

316 will last alot longer

Isnt cadmium a dull coating anyway? there are two varieties, the golden tinge of cadmium and the dull grey (Im guessing your going with the grey?)

If its 316SS youd be silly not to use it
if its 304 I dunno,

Anyone know what ss spokes are normally made from.
304 has better flex then 316 and wont crack as easy.
Curious what is the norm.

If you don't fall off you are not going hard enough

Just did a quick search and it seems 304 spokes are the norm. Moose Racing , Talon etc.
I am queesing 316 is too brittle.

304 wont rust if you wash your bike normally, so I wouldn't worry about that.

I am probably going to go with the CAD ones, and i didn't know there were two different types of colours..

I will keep use posted when I know more and upload some pics when the bike is done.

Stainless. Only stainless. CAD spokes will look bad after a year, no matter how well you take care of them (unless it is a show bike and you don't plan on riding it). The only other reason to go with CAd is if you are planning on selling it right away.

Cheap grades of 304 will rust and SS is bad for galling.

stainless only galls if you mix your metals (stainless on iron etc) or if you dont use anti galling products

304 on 304 with anti galling past shouldnt have any issue :)
