The only thing not stock on this bike is I removed the countershaft disc brake. They work great, but in wet conditions they collect too much mud. So, I removed it and run only the brake on the rear hub. All earlier ATKs ran only the caliper/rotor on the countershaft for the rear brake. Starting in ‘93 the FIM pressured ATK to put a brake on the rear hub out of the FIM’s irrational concern that a chain might snap and the bike would then lose its rear brake. Had never happened, but to oblige the FIM ATK added a rotor and caliper to the rear wheel in addition to the one on the countershaft. Racers frequently removed one or the other, because two brakes on the rear wheel was really way too much power.
As to the Rotax engine in this bike, it is phenomenal. Huge but controllable power. Tons of torque down low, which allows me to run a gear higher in the woods and lug it whenever I want. It is always a 1-kick starter when warm and a 2 or 3-kick starter when stone cold. Oh, and best of all, it is blinding fast.

My name is Jesse Miller and i am from British Columbia, Canada. I am 15 years old and i love motocross. Last year i finished third overall in the 661 BC Championship series. I have only ridden two strokes so far because there cheaper to maintain, funner to ride, and they take more skill to ride. With four strokes the bike does all the work, it tracts better, and it has more torque. I figure that if i can keep up to them on my two smoke I will be a lot faster than them by the time i am big enough to ride a four stroke. GIVER ZING

Here are two of Mark’s bikes. The CR500 is a 2001 with zero hours on it. The KX500 is from 2004 with 37 hours on it. Very clean machines!

Hey TSM,
First, I want to commend you guys for making such an awesome website for such an awesome breed of dirtbikes!
I am a fairly new two-stroke convert. My brother and I grew up riding XR’s till about October 07. That was when a friend of mine let me ride his YZ250. I was instantly hooked. About a week later, I traded my 1997 XR250 for a 2002 YZ250 and have never looked back!! My brother followed suit and bought a 2000 CR250. Both of us agree that these are the best bikes we have ever owned. I only wish that I had discovered the light side sooner!!
These are some pictures of my brother and I at the 2008 Glen Helen HYR 6 hour race. Needless to say, both our bikes made it through the whole race without any issues whatsoever (they were practically begging for more!). Now for the 24…
Anyways, thanks for the great site, all us two-stroke fanatics love it!
Braaap!

Hey TSM,
I just found your site from thumper talk, and it is awesome! It’s so good to see a site with such passion for 2 strokes. Recently I bought what will most likely be my final dirt bike(as I can’t foresee any need to upgrade)…. A CR500AF (see attached pic). Now for the price of what I paid for the bike, and getting the bike shipped over here (Aus), I could have had any new 450 I wanted, but there was no chance of that happening. Now I have never looked back, I get a bike which is just as fast if not faster than any current 4 stroke at a 1/3 of the maintenance costs and rock solid reliability. Thanks TSM for making the perfect website!
Regards
Brett

Jose is the one that originally came up with the idea for the member’s bike page. Thanks Jose!
Jose says;
I was happy to see there are people like me that refuse to give up two strokes as the most simple and efficient racing machine.
I do have stories of outperforming $7,000 four strokes with my not so new two stokes!

The above photo is from my first race in 1976 at Englishtown NJ on my 1971 Rickman and then 20 something years later with some trophies I won with my “outdated trailbike” KDX 200.
My slogan is “I’d rather push my 2 stroke then ride a 4 stroke, long live the ring ding”…lol
I’ll be in touch and if there is anything you need me to do to support the cause, don’t hesitate to call on me.
Happy mixing!
