Definitely stop at the auto parts store and get some hi-temp sealant. I never install gaskets dry. Believe it or not even applying grease to both sides of a gasket is much better than installing it dry. Not only will grease or silicon help hold it in place while you install the cover it also helps the gasket to swell so it seals properly.

I actually just put it back on with some grease and took it for a ride. It doesn't seem to be leaking, but only time will tell.

Cool. I refurbished a 1984 KTM125 MX about 10 years ago and couldn't find gaskets anywhere other than head/base. So I made every gasket out of gasket paper and used grease when installing (suggested in the og manual) and every surface sealed up nicely and stayed dry.

I used it once a while ago on some little gasket (water pump I think) and I didn't fee like waiting a week for the right one to come in, so my impatience got the best of me... I used the gasket paper, but it didn't line up right so I ended up with a big mess. I know it was my stupidity and I should have waited, but luckily I have better patience nowadays  ;D
