Transmission oil leak
« on: January 25, 2012, 09:10:54 AM »
After replacing the clutch cover gasket because I had to take the cover off, I re-assembled that after cleaning both of the faces where it the gasket rest (On the cover itself and on the engine) but now it wont stop leaking and I can't figure out where. I haven't taken anything else off except the part that has a new gasket. I don't know what it could be... Any suggestions to help find the leak or anything would be appreciated  :)

did the gasket sit perfectly between engine case and cover? as the gasket is very thin, sometimes tend to fold insideways and not seal properly.

you definitely have to re-do the gastek, and you'll see what cause the leak.

good luck

Yeah... I kind of figured it would all have to come apart again for the third time in the past week  >:(  I just want to ride already  ::)

Ok... I THINK (and hope) I got this. There was a small piece of something right where I suspect the leak to be, so I took some 1000 grit sand paper and took care of it. And while I had it off, I also smoothed out the rest of the cover just to be sure. I will let it sit until tomorrow morning and see.

I took a quick glance at it this morning before I left... It didn't look good, there was some oil in the can I put under it to catch stray oil... It could be some the I spilled down the side when I re-filled it, but I doubt it... Its definitely not the gasket but it is leaking from the clutch cover so what now?  :-\

I always use high temp silicone when I put mine together.  Did you clean both mating surfaces before putting it back together?

I not only cleaned them, but I smoothed out both surfaces with 1000 grit sand paper. I just did that all around and it was my last time taking it off, so if it is still leaking, I am going to order another gasket... Maybe I got a defective one or something that just doesn't allow the existing one to work...

maybe the sandpaper took some material and left a tiny gap between parts. try using 2 gaskets and high temp as eprovenzano says.

I slowed it down... I think its the gasket. I'm not throwing any advise out, but I didn't sand it enough to take metal off. I noticed in the gasket it has this little craves that must be letting it out. I was able to slow it down to like a quarter sized puddle per night, so it should be good enough to ride until the replacement gasket gets in in a few days. Thanks for the help guys, I appreciate it  :)

Find the point of the leak and hit it with a very small amount of high temp silicone and if it persists slowly ramp up the torque in that area....1/16th of a turn at a time

Where can I find this high temp silicon? It's not at my motorsports store.

try a car parts store. it's the same silicone that's used in any engine gasket.

Ok. Thanks for the advise. I will try to find some tomorrow when I'm out. But, believe it or not, I think the leak stopped itself  ::)  I'm going to let it sit over night and see, but I didn't see anything this morning  ;D

If it 'stopped itself' uve either leaked it dry...(bad and unlikely judging by the lack of Omg its gushing out of my motor comments) or some kind of fod has blocked the opening....also a problem since it could make its way somewhere else in the motor....

No, unfortunately it was still leaking. The gasket is in, and I need to go pick it up. I know I wouldn't have leaked it dry because I put the bottle of transmission oil at the point of leak with a funnel and anything that leaked out I replenished.
