Porting
« on: January 19, 2012, 02:48:30 AM »
So I"m looking to do the required porting mods to my 01CR125.

Found the link in the Budget Racer article to HP bikes. Looks likes it will run me around 350.

I also got all the specs from an Eric Gorr article containing exactly how the ports need to be worked.

so what I am asking is 350 a reasonable price? or would I be able to find someone to do it cheaper?
This 350 also includes the modified piece for the exhaust valve and some epoxy building as described in the budget racer article. Money is tight, They will also sell me a Piston from a 02-04 YZ 125 which is supposed to work really well with the porting mods. So the whole deal will run me around 450 plus shipping.

Is this a good deal?
Thanks guys

For what you will spend to do it right, maybe it is time for a 250!  Honestly, that is a job you want a professional to do because you will get the most out of the setup.

I agree....send it to Mr gorr or don't do it....porting and flowing a case are things that if they're not done by ppl that know exactly what needs to happen when and where then it will completely ruin ur motor....however I disagree on the 250 bit if ur 180 pounds or less....if that's the case then a 125 is way more fun and flickable

I disagree a little... I am only 140 and I ride my 250 with no issues or handling troubles. To be completely honest, I have never raced 125's. I went from an 85 to a 250. It was a big change, but with the experience and getting used to, everything just comes naturally.
Mixin' gas and kickin' ass, Burnin' oil and smellin' royal. Two stroke until I die (which hopefully isn't soon)   If your not mixing gas, your not kicking ass.

Good info guys..I have to see what Gorr wants to charge for all the work. Have you guys Read the Budget Racer CR125 article? HP bikes did all the work for that, those are the dudes that will do all the work for 450, plus the piston. The motor needs some real help, I'm so stoked to get this done.

Yeah on the 250, don't get me wrong they are as gnarly as it gets but I'm really a 125 guy. I'm 33, 5'11 165 lbs. I've been training my arse off and this thing feel so light and corners so damn well its incredible. It just has a muffin of a motor. There is a race shop in town that does work for ArenaX dudes and his shop is pretty legit. I may check him out, that way he can install all the parts as well. I would hate to spend 500 on mods and then eff up the head when I re-assemble it.

Also, HP and Gorr both sell a 134 kit for the bike, I don't know anything about this. You guys have any experience with a 134 kit?

This thing is gonna scream, nothing beats doggin somebody on a 4 stroke with your 125!!! haha suckers! ;D

Thanks guys

Dave

honestly dude i would send it to the people that did the budget racer bike, they obviously did a good job, not saying gorr isn't good, but that's just my .02

and dude i know about the 125 thing! i'm 5'11" 180, i went from a 250 2 stroke, to a 450, back to a 250 2 stroke, and now a 125 :D
i loved my yz250 and its an amazing bike (still in the family though, convinced my dad to buy it) but when i rode a buddies 125 i fell in love, then i went and bought one. they're so much fun, and heck yes! nothing is better than beating your buddies who ride 450's on your little "piece of crap 2 stroke"

I've been using Eric Gorr's work for many years and am quite pleased with the work he's done. I've got a 134 kit, he also rebuilt my crank, on my CR125 and it was worth the money. I also had him do work on the top end for my 2001 CR250 and it's got more power than I need. I have to tell you that Eric is a two-stroke guy from way back and he doesn't mince words. He does work on 4 jokes too but reading what he writes about them he appears to have no love for them. I guess it really comes down to what you can afford and what support they'll provide after the work's been done. Eric usually haunts dirtrider.net and has posted some articles on this forum.

Not to be a grumpy ol' downer but...

I bet your lap times won't be significantly different on your ported bike than they are on your stock with a fresh piston.

I know it's cool to have the latest port and polish but the diff is very minor. A new set of tires will drop your lap times more than 2 hp will.

Just sayin'. Not hatin'.

Actually the porting  and exhaust valve mods are designed to fix several problems with the 2001 CR125 motor. Read the budget racer project these guys did. The bike is a turd, It has no top and and takes forever to wind up. Its saving grace is a killer chasis and good suspension. I picked it up for 800 bucks, this is the last thing that I have to tackle. Its a dog, so yes, it will lower my lap times. Every other 125 I owned used to light up with a dab of the clutch, this thing does not. And the jetting is right on. So its a matter of fixing the flaws on the bike.

Read here to see what I'm dealing with..

You say your not hating but How could you possible make such a statement without knowing about my bike, or my riding ability?

A proper custom pipe and an ignition would solve most of the drama's.

Umm...He did that back in '06. He relocated from his Streamwood Il digs to a whole "new" shop in Madison Wisconsin.

as far as gorr goes i would like to point out that if ur gonna bore out ur 125 then i would definitely go for an actual bore job, 10ccs isnt gonna give u much and the whole deal with mr gorr is that he invinted the 144 mod, he does the whole smash, does it better and does it cheaper, nothing beats getting the mod u want straight from the original.
