Charles, glad the "history" was "fun". You are doing more than I ever could have hoped for. Thank you!!

But no matter what my intentions are or were, it is yours to do as you please. I wish you every success with it.

Ford - Boy do I miss you!!!  :-* I didn't think being a non-riding entusiast was an issue either, but you'd be surprised at how many people wrote to me saying it was.

As for the coatings and mixtures... they were not and never were the issue. The problem was in NO way related to that aspect of the Project. In actuality the cause was so stupid as to be embarrassing. Maybe not so much to me, but others.... I can't in good conscious throw anyone under the bus.. which is why I took complete responsibility and refused to speak about what happened publicly.

Of course my point of view is only that, my point of view. Of course there are others that were a part of it and if they share what they know or experienced, it's up to them.

Brap - That would be between you and Charles.... how much do you want to pay him??

WOW!!! Thanks for the kind words.

I have not visited the site for a long time, my life has gone in another direction. Glad to hear that the site is growing with all of  Charles' hard work.

I know very few people know the beginning history of this site, as only a handful of us "two stroke" nuts were around on the Internet at the time. This is kind of a long story, but I will attempt to make it somewhat brief, to keep from boring anyone to tears.

Every story needs a beginning, so you'll need to know at least a little about me.

In the early 1970's I was introduced to scrambles at Fishkill NY and fell in love with motorcycle racing, unfortunately it was not until 1975 that I raced my first race on a 1974 CR125. Racing for nearly 8 years, I lost interest and "retired" for the first time.

For many years following my "retirement" it felt as though I was a motocross addict, I would buy a bike, race a few times then lose interest. Unlike many of you that have stayed with it from when you began.

Around 2006 feeling a bit nostalgic, I built a history site for my local racing district. This was done without permission using a free web site. It caused some attention and no one was really sure who had begun the site. One day I went to a local race (Claverack, NY) to talk to some old racers. There I ran into some old friends, specifically Jeff Conboy (www.raceprousa.com) and Tim Weeks.

Nearly everyone was racing four strokes besides these two guys, so we got into a long conversation about when the four-strokes had become prominent and why the rules were set up to allow double the displacement for four-strokes. Any one that knows these two guys will understand that once you begin a thought, these guys will start "riffing" on it and the jokes start flying. Before too long a paper plate was secured and the words "Two Stroke Mafia" was scribbled on using a black sharpie and duck taped to the EZ-UP.

Not wanting to be "left out" during the next week I designed a logo ( design is not really one of my strong points) that contained bullet holes and the text Two Stroke Mafia. At the following race I brought a print out of the logo, which began a whole new set of funny stories. This was so much fun!! Besides, racers walking past smiled when they saw the sign. So by the following week I created a quickie web site. Adding some photos from the internet.

Once they saw the web site, it was really on. We ended up changing the name to Two Stroke Militia. Then began getting some interest from a few others and wrote some articles, posted some jokes and caused some trouble on the local message boards.

You have to realize that we were doing this as a joke. Since I was doing the majority of the writing Jeff thought it would be funny to call me "The General". For anyone that knows me personally this is so far away from who I am a person that it's hilarious. Again, all done as a bit of a joke. None of us took it very seriously, we posted stuff we found on the Internet. It was our attempt to bring to the attention of others the silliness of a rule that in our mind made no sense.

Since it was a joke, after a while we lost interest. When the domain name came up for renewal, I checked the Google analytics and found that nearly 75 visitors a day were visiting the site. We hadn't updated it in many months but the site was getting traffic and much more than it had while we had been working on it! We decided to renew the domain name and rebuild the site using Wordpress.

Then the site really began to take off. But we had a weird image problem on our hands. It was called Two Stroke Militia and I was posting on other forums as "The General". How can you take that seriously?

After checking on Go Daddy, I discovered the domain name Two Stroke Motocross was available and purchased it. Changed the logo (again my very bad design) and moved forward. During this time we gained supporters and regular readers.

Soon after a few regulars suggested a Forum be added. A place for like-minded two stroke supporters to converse and share information, stories and more. I was dead set against it.

After spending time on other forums, I hated the way users attacked each other and didn't want to deal with all the fallout. Plus at the time there was a two stroke forum called Pinger Talk, which was not well visited.

Two users in particular kept at me for months, I relented by imploring them to become moderators and stating that I would be extremely strict in how I would allow users to interact with each other. Believing that more people would participate if they were not driven away by folks that lived to attack others.

Unfortunately, shortly after beginning the forum, both of these guys stopped being moderators. By then, quite a few people were using the forum and I didn't feel like pulling the plug. A few months later, Coop came to the rescue being one of the best moderators ever. (Can't thank you enough for the support, you're the best Coop)

With the help of the forum and the expansion of people becoming more interested in two strokes, other believers began contacting me at TSM. From there it went kind of crazy. The number of visitors every day grew into the multiple thousands. Which completely floored me.

So here I was, a guy who no longer raced or rode "leading" a group of two stroke believers. Next I wanted to be able to give something back, but was unsure how to make that happen.

Over the years, many people who supported two-strokes and worked in the industry began communicating with me on a somewhat regular basis. Little Donnie Emler at FMF and Rich Winkler from Dirt Werx were two of the most helpful, their help is and was deeply appreciated. But there are so many others that helped and supported the site, including Vince from Maico International. Vince was a huge help to me and helped me through many sticky situations. (Thanks Vince!)

In 2009, an idea from Derek Harris written on Thumpertalk (of all places) caught my attention. Derek wanted to show folks what he could do as far as building competitive machines and planned to "hire" a racer to race 2 or 3 Nationals on a YZ250 two stroke modified by him. I contacted him and offered to help. We talked back and forth quite a bit and we decided to work together.

This was the beginning of Project Two 50. Which I want to state right now was totally Derek's project from the beginning. Even the logo was designed by Derek.

The idea of the project was to create enthusiasm for the two stroke on the National level. Which of course was what I hoped for.

Unfortunately, Project Two 50 is a whole different story. Many people were hurt and upset with how that turned out. To this day I take full responsibility for the failure of Project Two 50. Maybe someday I'll write more about that, but not here or now.

After Project Two 50 imploded, my interest in motocross and racing was at an all time low. Charles had been an advertiser on the site who had been pretty nice. (with the exception of Coop's initial run in with him LOL) So before advertising the site for sale, I contacted Charles as he seemed extremely passionate about Two Strokes. We spoke and worked out a deal, and he became the sole owner of Two Stroke Motocross.

There are so many people that deserve thanks for their help in building TSM to the site it was when Charles purchased it. I could never fully thank them all properly. If you are reading this and had a hand in helping TSM grow, I thank you.

I hope this helps to explain the beginnings of TSM. It has grown tremendously under Charles' stewardship and I look forward to seeing it grow into the future.

Charles, you are my hero!!

All the best,
John

Burn, I just saw the numbers for the first time in months, amazing!

Thank you very much for taking the bull by the horns and running with it.

I know that not everyone agrees with how you set up the petition, but you did something and put yourself out there. I've got my fingers crossed that you'll get some rules changed.

I stopped in just to check out what was going on and wanted to just address a few things.

First what I wrote was my opinion, plain and simple. You are always welcome to agree or dis-agree. I just felt that the "tone" and intent of some of the comments about MI were out of line. This is a personal flaw of mine.

Sort of how I felt when a rule change for a bike with twice the displacement was approved for motocross competition. Then the media blasts stating that it was fair. This was why I began this site. At the beginning there were very few of us.

Quote
You seem to consider it sacrilege that someone would dare question the motives or actions of MI.Given the situation,I find it to be entirely reasonable. Ford832

Ford, It's not that I consider it sacrilege, I just don't like to see anyone unfairly attacked. If you disagree that's fine.

Quote
Anyway,it's good to see you post John,I miss your input. If as you say though,we won't hear from you until bikes are available,I fear we'll never hear from you again-and that would be a shame.Ford832

Thank you, that's very kind. I will pop on from time to time. I only meant that I wouldn't talk about Maico or MI.

Quote
John you must remember we are all friends here, nobody is against you. Just because we talk about MI like this doesn't mean we wish to slander them or hope for their demise. After all, no publicity is bad publicity. We are simply interested in MI and the future or Maico. Keep that in mind. ACMX

Andrew, I hear you. I didn't nor do I think anyone here is "against" me. They are stating their opinions.

Quote
John I think your being a bit egotistical with your post! maicoman009

Maicoman009, I'm sorry you feel that way. Just like you, I'm only stating my opinion. The only difference is you seem to be very angry with MI and I'm not.

The reason I have not talked about what I do know in more depth, is out of respect to the people that shared this information with me. When they are ready to release information, then we'll know.

Maybe I can re-state what I was attempting to say in my first post.

Have you ever tried something that was audacious and amazing, something you believed in with all your heart and then failed at it? Have you ever done something like this in a huge public way?

It's tough being a trailblazer sometimes. Your a hero if you succeed. But when you fail… well, it's not so easy.

I'm only saying, imagine walking a mile in someone else's shoes before judging and condemning them. And more importantly, make sure you know the entire story from a few reputable sources and not hearsay or slander before slamming others. Again, just my opinion.

Peace, out!  ;D

P.S. Hodaka's are cool!

As you may have noticed, I haven't been on here very much. All my choice.

Do you really want news or are you just looking to create more animosity towards the folks attempting to do something to improve a two stroke? Because much of what's been written has been pretty negative towards Maico. Mostly on this site.

The reason I've said nothing is because after I post a bunch of folks jump in and write something terrible. The information I had been providing had been of an inside nature, from a very small factory. From these kind of posts it's obvious that doesn't work.

So until there is actual news, like bikes are available, you'll not hear anything from me.

Oh, and by the way, some of you guys have the story (written in this thread) completely wrong... just saying.

Hmmm... 11 pages so far about something that was created with the stroke of a pen.

The real issue is that through marketing the average joe believes that it's fair for a four-stroke to be larger than a two-stroke. While at the same time claiming they are better. Not sure how that adds up, but it's what's causing the rift even between fellow two-strokers.

Here's something that will cause a bit of trouble. I love four-strokes!

There is a place for them. While at the races I watched some of the older vet guys and their four-strokes will probably last for 10 years or more.

The problem is that the rule change created years ago has confused old timers and bamboozled younger racers who grew up after the four stroke "revolution" began.

Yes the speeds of the races is higher. This is due to the "straightening" of the tracks. There are very few "difficult" sections or tight corners, everything is sweeping and banked. Sort of like NASCAR.

In a conversation with Rich Winkler (the guy that builds the AMA Supercross tracks) the indoor tracks have been modified in a huge way to accommodate the four-strokes.

Keep in mind one important factor when discussing the difference between the two-strokes and four-strokes, there is no fair comparison. Why? It's all a marketing driven.

All pro racing is designed to sell bikes. Plain and simple. Currently the bikes the manufacturers are trying to sell are four-strokes. The good news for us two-stroke fans, is that it's backfiring like a rusty old Model T. The warehouses are full of four-strokes the manufacturers can't give away.

The future will be different.... get out your crystal ball to see what it's going to look like!

WOW!!! Now the pressure is on!!

I will get to this as soon as possible, but please understand that I'm on vacation this week. I'll be staying at my mother-in-laws house in Dover Delaware.

The mfg has supplied me with a great deal of information. We are still going back and forth with e-mails gathering additional information.

John,as for changing things, that's true to an extent but some things have a time frame and if you miss it,it's gone-there's no going back.I almost joined the military at 18 as I was in the reserves anyway.Had I done so,I would have retired last year with more pension than I'm making now in salary-and I wouldn't be looking at another 20 yrs to work.

Ford, the statistics are scary... retirement = early death

Besides if you love something, wouldn't you want to continue it throughout your life? Sure there is a time limit on stuff like becoming a Pro motocross rider or possibly in your case a porn star ( 8) ) but there are other journeys in life to explore.

When you stop living and learning you're just waiting to die...

Yeah, but it leaves the market open for a premix smell deodorant!  :o :o

Fabulous job on the bike! Looks amazing!

What a sad video....

I've lost a lot of respect for Ryno... I thought the guy was more mature than that. Sure the other guy probably did something stupid on the track, but Ryno beat him by something near 30 seconds!

Just let it go.

What's worse are many of the comments on Vurb. Truly disturbing. Hopefully most of the comments were by 13 year olds.

Back in the day, those Maicos were the ultimate in handling... I had the opportunity to ride my buddies Adolph Weil replica, it was amazing! Better then the other bikes of the time.

Life is all about change and I've found you constantly have to restructure your life to keep up with the flow.I've got ten years on you Coop and I'm embarking on an "Excellent new adventure",it can be scary at times, but it's never boring and that helps make the journey worthwhile.

I could not agree more!!

Life would be boring, at least to me if it always stayed the same. I could not perform the same job over and over again every day, I know some people love it but for me it's worse than death. I feel life is about getting off your duff and trying new things all the time. That's the real juice in life.

For those with regrets, it's easy to have them looking in the rear view mirror. As they say hindsight is 20/20. Just appreciate what you have and if you don't like what you have or where you are... change it! The only thing holding you back is you.

Dogger,

Your bikes always have that factory bike look and feel to them, with everything looking absolutely new and original. Awesome job on this one.

What's the deal with the suspension? It looks like it's a couple of grades higher than the standard bikes have on them...

How bad is the rear spring to case overlap? Even from the photos about it looks like it will hit. Can't wait to see the way you solve it.

Looking forward to more photos.

The guys that created this kit are responsible for the article that has gotten the most traffic on the main TSM site;
http://twostrokemotocross.com/2010/04/new-2011-yz125-spy-photos/

Yes it may be high-priced, but it's not outrageous for what you get. A custom gas tank is big bucks to manufacture, plus the custom sub frame. This is all done by a small shop and has nothing to do with Yamaha motor company.

It's really funny but the biggest reason that many people didn't want to buy the new Yamaha 2 strokes was the fact that the plastics looked dated! To me that's the dumbest thing ever, but hey each to their own.

One thing is for sure, if you show up with your Yamaha two stroke with that kit, you will get a lot of attention.
