Technical / Re: YZ250 Spring Rates
« on: June 04, 2012, 05:27:41 AM »
Forks stock .44, went to .45. Works perfect
Shock stock 4.9, went to steel 5.4. Not so good.
Rider: 49 year old 220lb, decent ability all around, former MX racer, can still beat my kid on his RM125 but not for much longer.

Thanks.  I’m questioning going to .45’s or .46’s on the forks. I hear there can be a lot of variance in ratings though, so when my manual lists the standard spring as .438, I’m assuming that’s basically a .44, and the next stiffer listed is a .449 which I’m assuming is a .45 rating, that might not make a noticeable difference if the spring ratings a little off.

Without riding it, I’d tend to agree that a 5.4 rear spring would be way too stiff to go with .45 fork springs.  Did Factory Connection suggest the 5.4?  Did you change it out for a softer rate yet?

I did full Factory Connection on my 08 YZ250. I went with their advice and upped the spring rated at both ends. Everything worked better except on big bumps where the rear end would kick. The clickers did not help much. I left everything alone untill I rode at my favorite riding area which I ride very fast in sandy whoops with lots if tight turns (woods). Here I realized the back truly was oversprung. I put the stock spring back on the rear. I left the heavier springs in the forks since they worked great. Now all is improved over stock (not by a whole lot since it was so good to begin with) and handling is exactly like stock. I did make several changes on the front and rear clickers to get it working right with the softer spring. My 2 cents.

Do you know what spring rates you used, and did you use a steel or Titanium replacement spring in the rear?

Yep, they are ~$600 from DSP (havent priced Yamaha OEM which I'm assuming is KYB made) but I'm sure it about $600 as well.

I have a line on barely used one for under $100.

Technical / YZ250 Spring Rates

Figured this might be a good place to ask what everyone;s experience has been with different spring rates on late model YZ250’s.  Post up any rates, specs, front and rear that you’ve tried and how they worked for you, what kind of riding you do, what year YZ, etc.

I am pretty much narrowed down to what I want to do, but there was a bit of a debate when it came to the rear titanium spring being replaced with a steel spring (I hear an equal rate steel spring feels / is slightly softer).  Planning on sticking with a replacement Ti spring that I can get a great deal on, and going with a 5.1 (stock is 4.9) while taking the forks from their stock .44 to a .45 or .46

This was reported on by MXA... Scroll about 3/4 of the way down the page at the link below...

The stories of theft at Milestone Raceway have permeated the MX community by now, and this stuff has got to stop!!

When I heard that a friend and fellow videographer had over 6 grand in equipment (basically his entire production setup) stolen from his locked truck at Milestone Mx, it really hit me just how crappy and violated you’d feel if it happened to you.  I think we can all imagine having our dirt bikes stolen, and to us video and photo guys, we look at our camera equipment in much the same way. It’s a passion and a hobby we invest in meticulously, and to have it taken away by some faceless scumbag has got to be one of the worst feelings ever.

Kyle ‘elmo’ Cowling of The Obscura Creative Group has been giving back to the MX community for many years now, most notably as a photographer for Transworld MX, and now as one of the best upcoming moto video producers out there.  The thought of not seeing Kyle’s regular web edits hit the moto websites just doesn’t sit too well with me. He has made an honest living working hard to be able to invest in the equipment he needs to get the job done, and now he suddenly finds himself at square one again.

Times are tough, but if want to help out someone who gives back to the MX community with great video coverage regularly, please donate and let’s help get Kyle back to work making some of the best videos out there.

Go to www.paypal.com and click on the link to “Send Money”. A fund has been setup to help Kyle and The Obscura Creative group replace the equipment that was stolen at Milestone Mx.  Please use the following e-mail for all donations sent:

There may be a $3 fee if you are paying by credit card but it is waived it you pay through a bank account or other means.  I’ve got the first $100 on this effort, who’s next!?

I'd like to thank FMX Pro Bryce Hudson for initiating this idea and ultimately taking the first step to help out one of his moto brethren.  Thanks B-Hud!

It’s official!  Even stock 2-strokes love a little bit of race gas. My bike ran so clean this weekend, and I only mixed it with a 3:1 ratio of pump:race gas. A noticeable difference. I don’t know if I’ll be able to go back to using just Octane Booster.  :P

So whats the easiest way to get a perfect, say 4:1 ratio if I'm not mixing 5 gallons of gas at a time?  It's be easy to put 1 gallon of race gas in a can, then put in 4 gallons of pump gas, add premix for 5 gallons and go ride... But what if I want the same ratio for only 2 gallons..??..

I'm not very good at math, but I'm thinking I'll need to put in 1.8 gallons at the pump (204.8oz) and then add 51.2oz of race gas for 256oz (2 gallons) total and then premix for 2 gallons to get it spot on..??..  Am I way off here. ???

The modern Japanese 2 strokes are designed to run on pump gas.

Yes but they toe the line... The owners manual on a YZ calls for "a research octane number of 95 or higher".

I always ran octane booster to band aid it, but I finally had to run straight pump gas last weekend, and I can 100% say the bike sounded a bit ratty and just didnt seem quite the same.

It's been awhile, but I need to track down some VP to mix in with my weekly pump gas diet... I ran C12 a few years back but I notice VP mas quite a few available.

I guess I could just read up on it all here, but some personal opinions / experiences never hurt.  I'm wondering the price per gallon difference as well.

I hope you've got that dent taken out of the pipe.... I'd say thats a horsepower or two across the spread and thats a small dent.

Are you replacing the gas tank as well?  I noticed the original one looked to be the old 97 dark blue color… Personally I’d have gone with all the plastic in that color.
