Unless there is a way to tune the air entering the engine as well it is not really possible to do this with FI alone. The proper mixture is roughly 15:1 air to fuel. The FI could tweak that but then, just like a carb, too much gas would blubber and too little would overhead and seize. Now if the computer can vary the timing as well then you can tweak the powerband a bit and if you can remap the throttle opening relative to the wrist position THEN this can really be made to happen. But just having FI does not mean automatic 'Put the powerband where you want it".
Also relative to the comments about a FI bike not being a "real" two stroke, I don't buy that either. The fuel will burn properly at 15:1 -- it doesn't care one wit about how it is mixed as long as its at the spark plug at that ratio. FI can provide more accurate metering at all rpms and throttle settings
if done right but replacing a carb with a proper FI should just make a bike run all around incrementally better (again, if its done right with all the appropriate sensors, yada yada).
And yes, FI/DI is more complex. But then again so are power valves, water pumps, disk brakes and all the stuff my 1973 yamaha 360 doesn't have and still seem to have been made to work ok on today's bikes. Just my $0.02...
Cleaning up a 2T motor would allow it to be a modern dual sport "smoker" and that is MY holy grail.
for the record I still prefer my Carb... cos I love the hit, each to their own though hey..
the cool thinig about the fi is that you can tune it the way you want, so whoever buys a bike can have it hit hard, or have it smoothed out
