Milan, 8 of November 2011.
After the first presentation of the Ossa TR 280i prototype in Milan, a new development work began before the production of a really new revolutionary bike. Two years later, Ossa Factory has chosen again the EICMA show to present a new prototype that will stand out in the enduro discipline. The Ossa Enduro is born with a large work experience and incorporates some novelties to get a lightweight and maneuverable bike with a brilliant engine.

It’s a bike with innovative features that once again make a difference and keep Ossa Factory’s philosophy: to provide the market with a

technologically advanced product with lots of advantages such as performance, and the possibility to tune and adapt it to the requirements of

every riding style.
The new Ossa Enduro 250i/300i recovers the idea of the 70’s and it emphasizes an adventurous design and a compact motorcycle. Within its

characteristics, the most relevant are a revolutionary two-stroke engine, a perimeter chassis and a new position of the air box.

Revolution

If the Ossa TR280i revolutionized the trials discipline, the new Enduro 250i/300i appears with the same spirit but with the advantage of all the

experience Ossa Factory’s team has gained in the past years. The separable chassis of the new Ossa Enduro 250i/300i made of cromoly,

has a perimeter structure and the fuel tank is not part of it, but it is placed in a lower and forward position. The particularity is that the air filter box

has been placed inside so that it is protected by the cover of the fuel tank. The premium quality suspensions are from Öhlins, a brand with which Ossa

Factory has an interesting cooperation. The position of the rear shock on the right side allows for extra space to fit a part of the exhaust pipe. This

shock works with a progressive linkage system assembled onto tubular swingarm.

The inverted fork has 48mm stanchions and the 260mm disc on the front and 220mm on the back with Brembo callipers ensure powerful and safe braking.

Engine

The two stroke engine with a one-piece crankcase and removable gear assembly

of the Ossa Enduro 250i/300i features a new and revolutionary double injection

system designed in association with Kokusan and an electronic exhaust valve

which is controlled by the same ECU as the injection.

One of the injectors is situated on the crankcase and the other on the

cylinder. This is rather unusual as it is normally placed on the cylinder head, but this new system offers amazing possibilities to fine-tune the bike response.

Design

The design of the Ossa Enduro 250i/300i is aggressive and modern, in the same line as the TR280i and it will continue to make a difference with this

versatile and compact bike, and its prototype is presented in the EICMA Show in Milan. An environment which is part of the history of the brand and

it captures how the Catalan brand is focused on the international market.

Two years of work and an investment of nearly two million euro.
The Ossa Enduro 250i/300i is, for the brand of the shamrock, much more than just a new product. It is an important step as it

accomplishes one of the initial objectives of the company when it returned to the

market in 2009. These were to consolidate its trials bike (TR280i), to develop a

mixture of a trials and a trail bike, and finally to launch enduro bike which is presented in this EICMA Show in Milan.

The development of the Enduro 250i/300i has been done by the Ossa team which is in the project since the end of 2010 with the objective to create a pre-series of 20 units for the importers in the beginning of 2013.The first production of 2000 bikes will be carried out in the factory Ossa has in Girona, and they are scheduled to be distributed in June 2013. The total investment of this project will reach the amount of two million euro. The international distribution of all Enduro versions, in the different cubic capacities, will be via importers, in the same way Ossa does it for the other models. Only when the project is completely developed, will the brand form a team for national and international enduro races, by the 2012-2013 season.

This enables the powervalve timing to be more precise to the rpm inturn allowing it’s performance to be maximised. The 125cc engine also features a revised piston, new ignition programming and the new lighter gearbox selector barrel and matching selector forks.

The 144cc engine receives only minor changes in the form of a new piston, revised ignition mapping and fuelling, the new gearbox components feature also.

For 2012 the 250cc engine has only a minor modification to the cylinder skirt for 2012 and some small cylinder head revisions, again the new gearbox selector barrel and forks feature as do some small changes to carburetion and ignition as well as some modifications to the clutch pressure plate and plate material.

The 300cc engine, which recieved a new cylinder and cylinder head in 2011, has only some minor changes, the already powerful, torque laden and very user friendly powerplant has had some minor measurement revisions to the 2011 cylinder and head. This engine will also receive the new gearbox selector barrel and forks as well as the revised clutch pressure plate.

All Enduro 2-Stroke models will again feature the new Kokusan Ignition with the built in lighting generator which eliminates the need for the ACG on the crankshaft, this increases throttle response and lessens engine vibration.

Chassis…….

For 2012 the big news is the arrival of a new 85cc machine, the new machine will feature an aluminium chassis, like it’s larger siblings, matched to an aluminium sub-frame, it will have new bodywork in the form of the larger machines and will of course still feature TM Racing’s incredible 85cc powerplant. This model is unfortunately behind schedule due to material supply and will be available some time in the new year.

All full size models will recieve a new decal package, a new front fender design, a new headlight assembly and new speedometer unit on Enduro and road machines as well as some smaller details such as a new sprocket guard design, revisions in sprocket sizing and some revised fixings. The 2011 changes are still kept and this included a new swinging arm design and new chain guide, a new frame and engine plate protection system and the ‘factory’ Brembo clutch master cylinder which is now fitted to all models in the range, this increases clutch feel and reliability. New suspension settings have been tested for 2012, adapted and now implemented into the forks and shocks, spring rates, valving, oil compound and quantities have been tailored specifically to the model and it’s application for both forks and shock, this has been designed to aid both the comfort and handling at a varying range of speeds, suspension settings for EN machines will of course be softer than the MX equivalent. There is also the option of a new shock absorber design, tested and manufactured in-house by TM Racing which features a billet body and high quality internals.

For 2012 the high specification quality components will remain as normal and will feature, Marzocchi Twin chamber forks, Ohlins / TM Racing shocks, Billet machined aluminium hubs laced to anodised Excel rims, Billet machined aluminium triple clamps, Hydraulic clutches, HGS exhaust systems, Oversize taper bars, quality fixings and fastenings and of course hand finished and assembled engines.

Engines feature include:..billet machined crankshafts, billet machined con-rods, high quality forged pistons, high grade titanium valves, copper beryllium valve seats, V-Force reed blocks, downdraught fuel injection and hand finished castings for better matching and improved flow. It is the combination of these quality components and the care taken to finish and hand assemble these engines that allow all TM machines to perform at the highest level in production trim.

Well for 2012 the brand is selling only two-strokes in the US. Why has a company that has been exclusively four-stroke now exclusively two-stroke?

he answer may be more complicated than we will ever know, but the economy might just be the biggest factor. The pricey Husaberg four-strokes have been slow selling over the last year and there are still plenty of 2011s to be had at dealers right now. And the two-stroke is all-new, well at least if you are a Husaberg rider.

Looking sharp in the yellow and blue skins, the 250 and 300 TEs are basically 2011 KTM XCWs with some minor tweaks. The biggest change from its orange brother, besides the look, is the closed cartridge front fork, as the KTM XCW has an open cartridge unit. A Husaberg clutch cover and a unique radiator shroud change the look more than just the color.

Additionally the bike comes stock with a 2-position switch for the ignition maps, one mellow and one aggressive. Arriving standard with handguards, a skid plate, frame rail protection, a few premiums when lined up against the KTM it so mirrors. And like the KTM, it is an electric-start, six-speed machine with a 2.9 gallon fuel tank. Priced at $7899 for the 250 and $7999 for the 300, they should be at dealers immediately

2012 Yamaha YZ 250

Yamaha won its first World Motocross Championship back in 1973—with the original YZ250 two-stroke. Today, featuring a lightweight, long-stroke engine that delivers an instant hit of free-revving power, the YZ250 is still the ultimate two-stroke race bike.

(Note: Yamaha will not be releasing the 2012 bikes until September. The two-strokes will be included in the American lineup and, while these are official Yamaha photos of the 2012 YZ250 and YZ125, the American branch of Yamaha will not be releasing its official two-stroke photos until September. MXA just thought you’d like to see the bikes before then so you could make plans).

Its high-tech aluminum chassis has new lightweight wheel rims, reducing unsprung weight for enhanced handling and suspension performance. New speedblock graphics give a factory look, while a special new seat design has just the right balance of grip and rider mobility.

KTM takes two-strokes seriously and it is showing in their sales charts—KTM sells more two-strokes that some Japanese brands sell of all of their motocross bikes. So you can’t fault the Austrians for investing more money into the 2012 KTM two-strokes:

(1) The KTM 125SX will return to the KTM line-up. It had been dropped several years ago when the 150SX was introduced. Now, KTM believes that the revitalized interest will fuel an increase in 125cc sales.

(2) KTM’s 150SX is an iconic machine that has found favor with everything from young riders coming to the minicycle class to older riders looking for a fun bike to race.

(3) KTM’s omnipotent 250SX already makes the most horsepower of any 250cc two-stroke made, but now ill benefit, along with the 125SX and 150SX, from the development work on the 250SXF, 350SXF and 450SXF four-strokes frames. The 2012 two-strokes will get KTM’s rising rate linkage, new swingarm, upgraded plastic, engine mods and new graphics.

MXA TWO-STROKE NEWS: A COMPLETE OVERVIEW OF TWO-STROKES FROM KATOOM

The Austrians still make 125cc, 150cc, 200cc, 250cc & 300cc version, plus a 300cc kit for the 2011 250SX

2011 KTM 150SX: Although KTM does not import its 125cc SX or 125 EXC models to the USA they still make them for the Euro market. The American branch made the smart move to replace all its 125cc two-stroke models with the 150SX. The 150SX motocross bike gets a new frame, plastic and PDS suspension for 2011. It has a bore and stroke of 56mm x 58.4mm, six-speed tranny and 200 pound weight.

2011 KTM 250SX: For 2011 the 250SX got the new chassis, PDS rear suspension, airbox, exhaust system, silencer, cylinder porting and plastic. With a 66.4mm x 72mm bore and stroke the five-speed 250SX is fueled by a 36mm Keihin PWK carb.

2011 KTM 300XC: The 300cc KTM 300XC utilizes a 72mm x 72mm bore and stroke engine, electric starter, 293cc displacement and six-speed semi-close-ratio gearbox. It differs from the no-longer-available 300SX by virtue of its larger gas tank, 18-inch rear wheel and enduro flywheel.

2011 300cc SXS ENGINE KIT: This kit is designed to fit on the 2011 250SX and turn it into a 300cc. With a retail price around $750 it is a simple way to get more power for your Vet class motocross bike. It is available in both SX and XC models (with the difference being the compression ratio).

2011 KTM 200 XC-W: The 200 XC-W enduro bike combines the lightweight and agile handling of a 125cc bike with the performance ability of a 250cc bike. For 2011 it offers better rideability due to a new exhaust system combined with an optimized carburetor, the 200 EXC is the perfect choice for everyone who is searching for the best handling and sufficient engine performance outside the standardized classes to have the most fun in offroad riding.

ELECTRIC START KIT: KTM makes a special electric start kit for its two-strokes to give every rider the ability to hit a button and go. The part number is 55112045044.

Pete and the 2011 TM’s will be exhibiting at the Indy motorcycle show next month in the Italian Trade area. We look forward to having you stop by the booth at Indy and hopefully explore re-starting your business relationship with Pete and TM. The first containers of bikes have been ordered and will be arriving in early March 2011.

We have put together a few options to help in your decision, or at least point you in the right direction!

First up is Yamaha, the last of the “Big Four” still offering new 2 stroke models in the U.S.

For 2011, Yamaha is offering the usual 125cc and 250cc models.

2011 YZ 125

2011 YZ 250

Has anything worth mentioning been changed for the 2011 model year? No. Although it is still a tried and true option if you are looking for a new MX bike. Yamaha gets a lot of grief for not updating their 2 stroke line every year, once they figure out where the real Motocross fans are maybe they will start putting some R&D dollars back into them.

Next up is KTM.

KTM’s seem to be popping up everywhere. Why? It may be called “Changing the Game” to some, I think they just know what the future holds for Two Strokes and they are ready.

KTM continues to keep the 2-strokes alive and well, not only by refusing to remove them from the lineup, but by actually improving the design each model year.

2011 KTM 150 SX

2011 KTM 150SX

The small-bore smoker is back again for all the light-handling, snappy fun. It gets the new PDS chassis and two-part silencer, along with some attention given to the wheels, airbox, and bodywork.

If you ride for fun, this IS the bike for you. I doubt you could find a better machine for Fun per Dollar.

2011 KTM 250 SX

2011 KTM 250SX

For 2011, the 250 SX also has the new PDS chassis with a revised airbox. The exhaust pipe is updated and matches the changes to the cylinder, including lower exhaust ports and new timing. A two-part silencer uses plastic injection molded around the aluminum housing for better fitment. Both models keep the ‘linkage free’ rear suspension this year.

Thank you KTM for investing in Two Stroke Research and Development, we do appreciate it!

Finally we have TM Racing’s Line-up for the 2011 model year. TM Racing is on fire right now, if you are looking for an ‘exotic’ bike for this season check them out!

TM offers four models that fall into the 125cc-300cc range. The 125/144, or the 250/300. All bikes are upgradeable and customizable at purchase. Made to Order!

TM Racing 125/144

TM Racing 250/300

MX models include these features:

Ohlins rear shock absorber, Marzocchi 50mm forks, billet aluminum hubs laced to blue anodized Excel rims, Billet aluminum triple clamps with damped handlebar mountings, oversize taper handlebars, oversize ‘wave’ brake rotor’s, HGS exhaust system, V-Force reed valve system, billet machined connecting rod, and a switchable twin map ignition system.

New engine changes for 2011 125 -250’s include revised transfer timing, CDI programming and new carburetion settings.

For 2011 the 300cc model hosts a completely revised engine which includes a new cylinder and cylinder head which alters both transfer and exhaust port timing, and also squish and compression values. New CDI program features working with new carburetion settings, all suited to a revised powervalve drive operation.

TM 250MX

Decisions.. Decisions…

So many love the build quality, engineering and ergonomics of the two-stroke racers that Honda has built over the years. So much so that they do almost anything to continue riding and racing them.

On the other hand Honda has stated very clearly over the past few years that they will no longer build two-stroke machines and that four-strokes are the future.

Regardless of the reasons for this switch, when Honda first started to experiment with two-strokes, they built a prototype. This initial test machine became the very first Honda CR two-stroke.

Terry Goode of MX Works Bikes located this test bed machine. Restored the machine to it’s original glory, then dug deep to find out as much as possible about this major move for Honda. The story that Terry discovered is worth reading. It also contains brilliant photos of this amazing machine.

Check it out!
