One of our passionate readers started circulating a petition to the AMA to allow two-stroke race machines into the Pro ranks. His suggestion was to allow a 144cc two-stroke to compete in the 250F class and a 300cc two-stroke to compete in the 450F class.

While it’s not the ideal many two-stroke fans would choose, it is a step in the right direction.

It’s important to keep one thought in mind, this is a step for the Pro Racing ranks. Many journeyman Pros have to pay for their own race efforts and spend quite a bit of cash in order to make their machines competive with the best in the world.

Of course when 144 and 300cc two-strokes are brought up the first question to come up is who makes machines in those sizes. This is a guide to point you in the right direction. It’s not as difficult as you would imagine.

Let’s start with the simplest, easiest path and move to the more labor and cash intensive.

Which manufacturers provide machines in these sizes?

TM Racing a small manufacturer in Italy builds purpose built machines in both a 144 and 300 size for motocross racing. These machines have been talked about for years, but have had spotty distribution in the USA for many years.

That has now changed since Barker Bros Cycles has taken over distribution rights for the US. In the first year of being US distributor, Dan Barker has placed machines in different parts of the country to allow potential customers to see and test the machines for themselves. In addition he provided Dirt Rider and Dirt Bike with a TM 144 MX for testing. Check out the current issue (August) of Dirt Bike magazine.

For 2011 look for TM Racing and Barker Bros Cycles to make bigger waves in the US market.

For those that don’t know much about these machines, they are hand built, works style machines. The best way to describe them is to say TM Racing is the Ferrari of dirt bikes. Don’t take anyone’s word for it, try one and decide yourself.

Purpose built 144 engine from TM Racing. These machines are super fast!

What other manufacturer build a 300cc two stroke motocross machine? The TM Racing 300 MX

Of course we can not leave the bright Orange machines of KTM out of a discussion of machines with different displacements. KTM builds bikes in many different sizes.

Over the past few years KTM has begun to make inroads into the sales strangle hold that the Japanese had enjoyed for many years. More folks are buying them, liking them and recommending them to others.

The 2011 KTM 150 (actually a 144) has taken accolades from every quarter with this machine.

While KTM does not build a Motocross specific 300cc motocross machine, they offer a 300cc kit for their 250SX. While it is an option it’s more expensive than buying on direct from the manufacturer.

Take the 250 SX and add the $800.00 300cc kit and you have a 300cc MXer.

These are all the parts included with the KTM 300cc kit.

MXA did a test using this kit on a 250SX. MXA KTM 300SX Big Bore

The lone Japanese manufacturer to still build and import two-strokes into the USA is Yamaha, with the YZ125 and YZ250. Unfortunately these machines have seen few updates since 2005.

While they are great machines, they are dated looking and have not had updates applied to them like the four-stroke line-up has.

Still they are good handling machines that can still be bought new from a dealer. That is if you can find a dealer that has any in stock! There seems to be very few of these machines built and made available to the buying public.

Even with these short comings, the Yamaha is a great platform to race in the Pro ranks.

To bring the little YZ125 up to the proposed 144 size there is a few options available. Probably the easiest is the GYTR 144 kit available directly from Yamaha.

The video below is of Pro Racer Max Anstie testing the GYTR kit…

While it’s not an inexpensive option, it certainly is one way of owning a YZ144.

MXA did a test on the GYTR 144 kit. MXA YZ144

With the YZ250 you could also build a 300cc racer using the L.A. Sleeve 270 kit. While this kit is built by using a steel sleeve, it seems to work quite well as the MXA test below shows.
MXA YZ 270 Build

In addition to the solutions listed above there are many companies that perform Big Bore surgery to your 125 and 250 two-stroke machines. Any one of these companies will take your bike and turn it into a 144 or 300.

My suggestion before trying any of these builders, is to ask others that have had work done by them and see what their experience was like. Then if you can talk them into it, try to take a test ride to see what you think.

Athena – Builds big bore cylinders for two-strokes. Available through larger distributors and your local dealer.

Eric Gorr / Forward Motion – Eric has been building 144 kits since 1976! He has tons of experience with big bore two-strokes. There is also some great advice to be found on his site.
http://www.eric-gorr.com/international144kits.html

Eric Gorr big bore kit.

Millennium Technologies – Well-known for there plating services, they also offer big bore services as well.
http://www.mt-llc.com/bigBoreKit.html

http://kustom-kraft.com/big-bore-kits.html

MAX Power – Builds big bore kits for all Japanese two-strokes

If you are determined enough to get something done, it can be done. There are machines available or that can be built that will fit into this proposed rule. Next up is to work to get this new rule passed!

If you have not done it, please sign this petition. http://www.gopetition.com/petition/38076.html

Catching the imagination of the global motocross community earlier this year with the release of the 2010 Maico M.M.X., manufacturers, Maico International are believed to be on course to produce the most British made motocrosser for over a decade with the 2011 model, which features a new U.K manufactured engine and frame following a unique tie up with a leading engineering manufacturer for F.1.

Spending the last six months focusing on major development and working closely with the managing director of the Surrey based company who engineer and manufacture gears and various other exotic mechanical parts for many of the front running Formula One teams, Maico International will be unleashing a range of 5 new two stroke engines in, 250cc, 320cc, 380cc, 500cc and 700cc capacity, all manufactured to the highest standard along with an equally comprehensive range of high end optional upgrades which have been designed to outstrip the competition in terms of power, performance, durability and reliability.

Maico Billet Clutch assembly

With the standard 250 expected to top 50hp and the monster 700cc closing in on the 100hp figure an all new frame has been designed to get the best from the new power-plants. Replacing the rather tired mild steel frame which has not been updated since 1999 the new Chrome Moly version produces cleaner lines and a more slender lighter figure and will play host to the well publicized (although slightly modified for 2011) 7020 aircraft ally Swing-arm and sub-frame whilst still retaining the superb handling characteristics the brand is so famed for. Opting for a nickel plated finish as standard the new metal-work will also be available with a regular painted finish in a selection of obvious colours.

Maintaining their position as standard equipment will be Talon wheels and the Kehin air striker carb which has proved to be a major improvement since its introduction on the 2010 range, along with the silicone hoses and all new H.G.S. exhaust announced earlier this season, several other products are also expected to be announced very soon.

<img class="size-full wp-image-3481" title="Factory H.G.S.
Maico International co-chief Lesley White said “Since the launch of the 2010 bike the response has been solid and steady from around the globe and now we are producing the bikes ourselves entirely in the U.K. we have worked tirelessly to ensure the standard models exceeds expectations and are a cut above the regular mass produced market that everyone has become acclimatized too and with yet more weight-saving introduced for 2011 the new 500 is likely to weigh in at a comparative weight to several other manufacturers 250 two strokes. We have combined this with a list of options, which is likely to read like a who’s who in engineering terms ranging from billet ally engine casings, and other ancillary ally parts to a wide selection of beautifully engineered titanium pieces for both inside and outside the engine, all designed to provide the same level of performance and quality that is delivered to the Formula one Teams.”

Lesley also commented: “For those who may be wondering at our reluctance to name names, due to confidentially agreements which are in place between our Engineering Company and numerous Formula One teams who naturally want to protect any information regarding the design and development on their cars we feel it’s very un-ethical to release any further information regarding their identity at this time”.

Pictures and full spec of the full range of 2011 M.M.X Maicos are expected to be released In September.

With lead times expected to be up to nine weeks those interested in securing one of the first 2011 bikes should contact your distributor or e-mail info@maicointernational.com

Another of the two-stroke faithful has taken it upon himself to show that these machines are still competitive. If you are attending the Washougal Pro Motocross National tomorrow (Saturday) make sure that you cheer, yell, wave or somehow make some serious noise when Devin flies by on the 777 machine. To match the theme of the weekend his bike just happens to be decked out in a retro Yamaha theme.

Good Luck Devin!!

Two Stroke Machines finish 1st and 2nd!

Las Vegas, NV (July 17, 2010) – Taddy Blazusiak, the defending EnduroCross champion rode his Red Bull KTM to a hard fought victory over Geico, Christini backed Geoff Aaron. Zip Ty Husqvarna mounted Cory Graffunder came out on top of a dog fight for the final podium spot over FMF KTM’s Mike Brown and Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Justin Soule.

Shotmaker Productions video of the race.

http://shotmakerproductions.com/ShotMaker%20Website/site/exws10_rnd1.html

Aaron, the ten time National Trials champion got the day started by setting the fastest time during the Pioneer Hot Lap that determine the gate picks for the evenings heat races. He also earned a $500 bonus from Rekluse clutch by being the fastest rider using their auto clutch. Mike Brown and Cody Webb, one of the top American Trials riders showed that he is quickly learning how to race EnduroCross by posting the third fastest time.

Blazusiak, Brown and Graffunder were the heat race winners and earned the best gate picks for the main event. The biggest surprise of the night was the fact that Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ricky Dietrich, the 2008 EnduroCross champion, did not qualify for the main after crashing while in a qualifying spot during the Last Chance Qualifier. He was joined on the sidelines by Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker, last year’s E3 Spark Plugs Junior Champion that also had a very rough evening.

Blazusiak earned the $750 Girardi Wealth management holeshot award but was quickly passed by Geoff Aaron. The two riders swapped the lead several times during the first half of the race until Aaron made a small mistake and fell over in the GEICO rock garden. That gave Blazusiak a small lead that he managed hold for the remainder of the race. The battle for third included Graffunder, Brown, Soule, Gary Sutherlin, Kyle Redmund, and Cody Webb. Webb appeared to have the final podium spot under control before crashing in the Monster water hole and then Graffunder temporarily handed the position away but fought back to get on the podium. Brown rode a steady race to earn forth position ahead of Soule. All of these riders had a shot at the podium and provided some great racing action for the enthusiastic crowd.

2010 Las Vegas EnduroCross Expert Class results:

1. Taddy Blazusiak KTM
2. Geoff Aaron Christini KTM
3. Cory Graffunder Husqvarna
4. Mike Brown KTM

A long time TSM supporter and reader Bill T. posted the following photos on our forum. In addition to taking photos, he spoke with each of these brave racers and added a short description to go along with each photo.

There really is a movement towards two-strokes at the local level.

The weekend we were in Okeechobee Fl. I was going to post all the Two Stroke bikes at the event, but there were to many for me to take pictures of. At the start of the 250 practice I counted 17 ! I didn’t count the 450 class.

I was pleasantly surprised to see how many Two Strokes were at each of the races. With my son Jake racing, I ran out of time. I told all of them about the Two Stroke Motocross.com web site and Project Two 50.

A few had heard about Two-Stroke.com. You would think they all had been to the web site by the stories they told me. Most told me it was more fun to ride the two-stroke and cheaper to maintain.

On the weekend of April 18, 2010 we were at Dade City Mx for the 5th race in the Florida Motocross series. There were racers preparing for and attempting to qualify for Loretta Lynn’s.

Anthony Zaffino 18yrs old 2009 MC250 Gas Gas!

Anthony has been to Loretta’s on his Gas Gas (what a great motorcycle!). He’s a very good rider. He ran in the Youth 16-24 class and took first place and some of the riders were on 450’s.

There were more girls and women on two strokes, but I didn’t catch up with them. I’ll try to do so as the season goes on. What I wanted to show was that Two-strokes are making a come back. More and more are being raced successfully! In Florida we have a very competitive Girls class. I’d love to publish some stories on the girls in the near future, so stay tuned.

Brinsley Dyess 15yrs old 2005 YZ250

Brinsley’s dad is Dean Dyess he runs the Florida Motocross Series. She was on a kx250F but said she likes the YZ250 Two Stroke better.Brinsley is one of the fastest girls in the state of Florida and has done well at Loretta’s the last couple of years.

I just wanted to share some observations. I wanted to show everyone that real people are racing two strokes. Well, to my surprise there are many of them out there.

What you guys don’t know is how many riders I’ve missed taking pics of (maybe more than I’ve gotten). The other thing is when I’ve talked to the riders… is their reasons for riding two strokes. Most didn’t know about this web site but had the same reasons we’ve been talking about for the last couple years.

Maybe because of the economy many have complained of the cost of buying and maintaining a four stroke, and that the choice was stop racing or race a two stroke. But with the rule change of 250 vs. 250 the racers are flocking to the two stroke to be competitive.

But the latest comments I’ve been hearing and hearing a lot is the two stroke is more fun to race and it’s the younger riders that have been saying it.

I think its a good sign for motocross and two strokes. The economy has hit us hard in Florida and our attendance at the races is way down and has me a little worried. I’ve talked to some of the parents that we started with and asked what happened to some of them and they say they couldn’t afford to race anymore! Some of the ones hanging in are doing it with the help of the two stroke, and its helped us hang in there also.

Amongst all the costs of motocross, there is one constant, sometimes tedious (at least for the beginner) and fairly costly maintenance aspect of off-road motorcycles. The tires.

Because I am relatively new to the sport of motocross, I can’t state this as a fact. Although I’ve heard tire technology has changed a fair bit over the years, there is a wide selection of off-road tires available to the public.

This is good, as we get lots of competition (Now where do we need more competition?) which pushes tire technology, and drives down tire cost for the buying public.

Taking all of this in to consideration, I began looking for a new set of tires. Being the ‘New to motocross’, ‘Spend all his money on motocross’ type of kid, I had a budget, and decided to search online. What I found sounded really good at the time, but I soon found out you get what you pay for.

Enter the Motosport.com “Artrax 125/250f” tire combo. The picture on the web site, shows a deceiving shot of a front and rear tire. When I say deceiving, I mean, the picture makes you think the back tire looks ‘beefy’. Like it could easily offer all the traction a motocross rider could want.

To my surprise, when I received my rear tire, the knobs were relatively small. I did not think much of it until I saw a friends brand new Bridgestone tire. When compared, there is a clear difference. The rubber seemed to feel like rubber (I hoped it would).

When it came to mounting the rear tire, the Chinese manufacturing comes into play. The tire shredded when I tried mounting it. While some of you may say, “Well, he is new to motocross, he did not know how to mount the thing”. I’ll admit I’m new to this mx tire mounting thing, but in this case a friend of my Dad’s, who’s mounted quite a few ‘name brand’ tires before, has NEVER seen a tire harder to mount than this Artrax .

I finally decided to bring the tire to the local Yamaha shop for mounting, and they had trouble with it as well! Once the mounting was complete, I began to worry about the wear and handling part of the tire.

The handling, well… it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t anything amazing, you could tell the tire was of lower quality and a pro would never consider it. Wear was a different story, after only a short amount of riding time there was already noticeable tire wear. The riding done using these tires was in relatively soft terrain riding areas with absolutely no road riding.

The rear tire is just not acceptable.

Now the front tire turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Comparatively, the knobs on the front tire were acceptable and didn’t look tiny compared to a name brand tire. The tire mounted fine with the bead fitting nicely.

The front tire hooks up good in the turns with no signs of wear thus far. Overall, the front tire was a good deal. While the front tire may not be top quality, and would not be an ideal choice for a professional, this tire definitely works for the poor, ‘addicted to motocross’ 16 year olds out there.

Now what about the entire combo? Well… I just can not recommend that someone buys the combo. The rear tire just caused me way too many hassles, and didn’t really perform well. On the other hand, the front tire was very good for the price.

So, if you find your front tire a bit worn and your wallet low on funds, maybe you’ll consider the Artrax front tire. While not for your race bike, it could work great for your practice bike or as a spare. Overall it’s a good inexpensive tire.

“Try not….

…..do or do not,

……there is no try.”
Yoda – The Empire Strikes Back

Why are we all so passionate about motocross? What is it about motorcycles and racing that gets us all revved up?

It’s fun! It touches a part of our soul. Once you are exposed to it, motocross will be a part of your life forever.

How did it start for you?

My introduction to motocross, resulted in a life long passion for motorcycles and racing that has spanned many years and brought me many life-long friends.

While there are memories that fade, others have been repeated so often that your friends are sick of hearing them. What remains is the passion, fun and excitement that constitute this sport called motocross.

Most of us began our indoctrination into motocross with our very first bike. Everyone remembers that very first motorcycle. Mine was a Yamaha 90cc two-stroke twin street bike that cost me the princely sum of $75. which was found in the corner of a nearby warehouse. With that machine I learned how to ride and work on bikes.

That first machine was a taste of freedom and excitement. Everything in the world was right when I rode that bike.

Motocross racing and motorcycles are fun! Isn’t that the main reason we get excited when we get to ride, race or spectate? That X factor. That smile you can’t wipe off your face.

Is it just me or does everyone feel this way about motorcycles and racing?

BEWARE OF THE DARK SIDE

Yet the strange part is there seems to be some folks that don’t seem to feel the same way.

It’s difficult to understand when people are upset or angry about our great sport. For some reason they seem to look for the bad or negative in every area. The subject many who visit this site are interested in, is the 2 stroke vs. 4 stroke question.

As I’ve said many times, both types of motorcycles can be a blast to ride and race. By all means buy the one that makes you happiest. Then enjoy and savor every moment. As they say, different strokes for different folks.

So why is it when a positive article or news is published about two-strokes, unhappy, hateful people show up to criticize it? If they’re so happy with their life and bikes, what’s the reason for the constant barrage of negativity, name-calling and put-downs?

Honestly, if these folks said nothing, the article or story they are complaining about would quietly slide into obscurity. What’s the big deal?

Could it be that it strikes a nerve? Maybe about something they may deep down feel is wrong? We’ll certainly never know the answer to that, so we speculate.

It’s easier to tear down someone or something. Possibly these folks get some strange type of pleasure from it. Or they feel better about themselves because they put someone else down. It doesn’t require much brain power to find fault with everything around you.

“I don’t believe it..” Luke

“That is why you fail” Yoda

MAY THE FORCE BE WITH YOU

Personally, I enjoy having fun and looking at the positive side of life. If I’m unhappy with something, I’ll either attempt to make changes or make a positive suggestion. Of course there are some things you can change and others you can’t, but complaining, bitching and whining does little or nothing for anyone.

How can we ensure that we always have fun? Well you could ignore the folks saying nasty negative stuff. In fact that would be a fabulous start. Certainly by giving them any feedback when they write or say something outrageous, just encourages them to do more. So what do you think is the best way to handle people like this?

A much more satisfying question is to ask is, what makes motocross fun for you?

Here are a few of my ideas/suggestions. Please add yours below.

It’s a blast to make motocross bike sounds! What better way to express something cool that happened when you were riding, then to make motorcycle sounds? Whenever I tell a bench racing story there is that familiar braaap, waaaaap or wahhh – wahhh – wahhhh to pepper the telling of the battles or excursions. It’s so much fun! It adds to the story and makes people smile or laugh.

Another fun thing I do is watch Pro racers very closely. How do they approach or tackle different obstacles. My personal favorite is turns. It really highlights a racers true abilities, fitness and throttle control. Nice stuff.

On top of the list is the ultimate, going riding with a bunch of buddies on your favorite dirt bike. Life just doesn’t get better than that.

So go out and ride whatever bike makes you happy.

Oh yeah…… don’t forget to smile!

It is under perfect skies that took place the first annual MotocrossQuébec.ca 2stroke Fest. About 40 2 stroke motocross fans from across the province of Quebec, Canada got together last week end on the picturesque circuit of St-Marcel de l’Islet. We were there to cover the event and report to those who could not be there.

The most anxious arrived early Friday afternoon. A cozy village built up around a central fire place. As usual with MotocrossQuebec.ca’s Ride Days, the party and no-pressure atmosphere brought smiles on the lips of everybody involved, regardless of their skill level on the track.

The day started early Saturday morning, everyone being so eager to hear the humming of two stroke engines and to smell the burning premix on a pristine track. Even though some less experienced girls opted to start the day riding around on the grass, they rapidly joined the other riders on the main track. Talking about the girls, they truly represented! in fact, there were almost as many girls as there were guys. Fortunately, they all had different riding gear, so there was no fighting in the only mud hole of the track. A team race was organized mid-day. Despite some hesitation from the beginner riders, the friendly atmosphere made this race really appreciated by all, and will probably become a classic in future Ride Days!

Under the light rain ordered by us specifically to gently water the track for Sunday, the party continued around Chef Isabike’s delicious ribs. The succulent pieces of meat pleased everyone including Gus, MotocrossQuebec.ca’s official mascott. It then kept going all night to the sound of coyotes crying in the distance, probably because they were so happy to see two ponytails arriving. Those guys definitely know how to party, and without them a Ride Day is not a Ride Day. But why did they came so late? To surprise us! Bill and Sly had been secretly working on a CR500AF in the last few months, and they finished it just in time to break it in at the 2stroke Fest. The craftmanship is excellent on the beast. Make sure to check out our website soon for more details.

Everybody took out their silky smooth riding style for Sunday, as two professional photographers came directly from Paris to witness the event. Their work will be available for everyone to see soon.

Some honorable mentions for the week-end: 17-year-old Émilie who drove across the Province all by herself in her beat up truck to come and ride her YZ125 with us. The two ponytails who finished their project just in time to show it to the world. Don’t forget Nick who doesn’t even ride and drove over 4 hours just to hear the smokers scream! And what about Dave who bought a brand new YZ250 especially for the occasion?

We’d like to conclude by thanking everyone who brought something to the table to make this event a success: Hipertech lubricants and TwoStrokeMotocross.com for their prizes. Jay and Isabelle for their hospitality and for the event poster. Francis Fontaine and his partner for their photography work. René Thibault and Mick Blanchet for their incredible track and facility. Finally, thanks to all of those who made the trip for this memorable event!
