I would be a lot better off if I had only one motorcycle. Currently owning 30 motorcycles make me an extreme case. Most guys can barely manage two dirtbikes, be it space or spousal constraints. But for all of those with the Multiple Motorcycle Disorder, I will outline a solution, if you’re willing to listen. But first, you have to admit you have a problem.

Of course I don’t have a problem, I’m merely a professional. And in that capacity I can tell you why the KTM 250 XC is quite possibly the single best dirt bike being produced. This middle-displacement, lightweight, high-performance, multi-tasking ride is simplistic and utopian beyond what I could write here or explain to anyone with a closed mind. For them there must be a test ride. But if you’re considering just motorcycle to accomplish whatever you desire in your riding requirements, this is the best way to get started and the best motorcycle to recommend if you want your advice to be credible. Sure, if you have a more specific purpose for your bike, there may be a better machine to recommend, but as a blanket suggestion, you can’t go wrong with the multi-tasking two-stroke KTM XC.

Sound like some sort of lustful love affair? Maybe we at Dirt Rider are bought off by KTM or have some underhanded deal with the Austrian company? Well, the reputation and current status of the bikes comes from a long road of consistent improvements and the ability to simply build the bikes riders are asking for. Across the board the company is making what some feel are niche machines, but there is enough demand for them. When we test these bikes they do just what they’re advertised to do.

For 2011, the entire and exclusively two-stroke XC line got a serious makeover. Starting with an all-new frame, retaining the non-linkage PDS shock system but benefiting from the raised shock tower, KTM is looking to push the handling even further. A longer shock gives the engineers and test riders more shock travel to work with. The shock tower placement isolates the forces outside of the main spar of the chassis, limiting the amount of feeling the rider gets in the bar from the back end of the machine. Coming with the chassis is a whole new set of bodywork that is slim, thin and plenty futuristic as well. If that wasn’t enough, the engine got a revised cylinder with a lower exhaust port, new timing and optimized powervalve control via a new main spring, not to mention the six-speed transmission giving the bike even longer legs. Everyone still think the two-stroke is dead?

Sure, the bike is not sold with a spark arrestor or any lights; it was never intended to be a trailbike. If you want to make it into one, that’s pretty simple. Although the bike has the same places to stick numbers on it as the SX line, it was not intended to be a strict MXer. But most can take it to the track and get away with riding it like any other MX bike; it works that well. Designed to tackle a relatively modern discipline of racing called “closed-course off-road racing” (a blanket term for everything from GPs to GNCCs to WORCS to EnduroCross), it is a perfect fit for the right rider, which means most of us. Then if you choose to expand its workload, it responds better than any other bike we can think of or have tried. It trail rides with minimal discomfort. It motos without performance-limiting holdbacks.

Riding the bike, a rider immediately will take notice of a few things. First is the electric start. Yes, even if the KTM 250 XC will kickstart simply, having a button to push instead is magical and makes it just that much nicer; don’t think all the luxury items are available only on four-strokes. Then there is the weight. Whether it’s on the scale at 225 (without fuel) or the feel of less mass when riding, the bike is simply feathery. You really feel it if you’re coming from any size four-stroke, and the minimal reciprocating mass stands out as the bike stays light even when the rpm go skyward. About the only drawback compared to some four-strokes is some additional vibration through the bar and sometimes the pegs. Next on the platter is the power delivery. The 250 XC has incredibly clean and crisp carburetion that will tug and torque at insanely low revs without the flywheel weight that used to be necessary to keep a two-stroke spinning so slowly. If you have been away from two-strokes for a few years now, this is an area that has come a long way. Then the bike pulls and pulls smoothly and with authority, revving out plenty far and with power that will keep a 450 in check. The downright disadvantage of the two-stroke is the overall power spread in each gear is shorter than a four-stroke, but this KTM masks any shortcoming here well.

Gear-to-gear pull is no problem with the semi-wide-ratio transmission; it basically has a lower first and a taller sixth with a motocross box in the middle, if you factor in how it is geared in the final drive. The hydraulic clutch is as magical as the electric starting and needs a similar explanation; you don’t appreciate it until you use it. First gear on the XC can tax the clutch in really technical trail work as the ratio is closer to an MX machine than a trailbike, but in this configuration the top speed is admirable and fast enough to allow you to lug it and keep 50 mp, with an 84-mph top speed.

The new plastic feels as slim and thin as it looks and hides just over three gallons of gas. That’s good enough for 60 trail miles or an hour of hard racing. You can move all over the bike and it never feels different than a motocross bike in regard to ergonomics. Add the adjustability KTM has built in through the multi-position top triple-clamp bar mount and the bike fits a wide range of sizes. The only item holding back a really large guy is the spring rates, which seem perfectly suited for the 170-190 pound range.

Speaking of suspension, KTM has found the magic place a lot of tuners are searching for. It is track capable, holding the bike up from dreaded wallow while allowing enough compliance in small bumps so it doesn’t hammer you on the rocky trails. If anything, the overall softer setting, compared to a strict MX bike, gets the Katoom into the turns better and gobbles up the chop on rough motocross tracks better than an MXer. It can suffer on big jump landings, especially with heavier riders, and in rolling rhythm sections the XC can move around more than is comfortable. But out on the trail the bike has a safety margin built in with the stiffness that regular trailbikes just don’t have. You can hit stuff harder and not worry about ripping your feet off the pegs. It holds the pegs up higher in ruts and away from stumps, logs, and rocks. Adding or subtracting a few clicks of compression front and rear can really change the feel of the suspension through the chassis without affecting the performance in a negative way.

The brakes are simply insane, thanks to a combo of great parts and the light bike they’re slowing. Air filter access is a tool-less affair, and the bulk of the maintenance is changing your transmission fluid every few rides. We’ve seen guys go 100 hours on top ends on these bikes, and the clutches last way longer than most even with the added abuse off-road can bring. About the most vulnerable part on the bike is the expansion chamber, but this two-stroke has to have one weak spot, doesn’t it?

When we first began this test we wanted to do another two- vs. four-stroke comparison. We asked around for another brand to stack its four-stroke against this bike in an all-around moto/off-road comparison, and there were no takers aside from the standing offer from Husaberg (KTM owns Husaberg) and another KTM vs. KTM comparison ( we already did that with the 150 SX vs. 250 SX-F) we won’t deny we are not surprised about this, because that fact alone shows just how good everyone knows this bike is; and in many regular-rider applications two-strokes are superior. But one final thing to consider, and I’ll wrap it up. When Jesse Zeigler left Dirt Rider he was bike-less. Having started here a motocross-bike-only rider and leaving with five years of bike testing experience under his belt, he was a knowledgeable consumer primed to make a bike purchase. He bought a KTM 250 XC.

This looks like a great bike! One of these is definately on the TSM wishlist!

I race them, fix them, restore them and promote them. There are always a heard of two-stroke machines in my workshop every month.

One problem when fixing or restoring two-stroke bikes is rusty exhaust pipes They are such a pain to get cleaned up. I’ve tried sanding them which takes too long, requires hours and a ton of elbow grease.

I tried sand blasting them, but few pipes actually fit into my small blasting cabinet. The ones that do fit, look fine if I paint them, but do not have the right look to leave them bare metal.

Rusted Pro Circuit pipe.

Another angle of the rusted pipe.

A friend asked to test some Pipe Gel manufactured by a company called Pro Clean. Since there was a very rusted Pro Circuit factory pipe hanging in the garage, it was easy to do.

The product is water based, but does contain acids, so gloves are recommended. To really test the product the same as in the real world, I followed the directions.

When brushing the Pipe Gel on using a brush, the blue jelly like compound sort of looked and felt like runny jello. I fully coated the pipe leaving the product in a thick coating on the pipe.

Pipe Gel applied to the Pro Circuit pipe... this was taken a while after applying the product.

Next the directions state to leave the gel on until the rust has oxidized or disappeared from the surface. Since I was not sure how long that would be, I set about doing some other tasks in the garage, checking every once in a while to see how well the gel was working.

Whenever you test something for a friend, you’re always worried that you’ll have to tell them that what they have is not very good. To be honest at first I wasn’t so sure that the gel would work.

After almost an hour I looked at the pipe and noticed a big change. To give the product a fair test I didn’t use a scotch brite pad only wiped it off using a rag.

I was blown away with the results! The Pipe Gel worked as advertised. Don’t take my word for it take a look at the photos. As you can see most of the rust was just de-solved off the pipe.

One other aspect to point out.. these pictures show how pipe gel works all by itself. There was nothing else done to this pipe. The procedure was simple and it did a great job removing rust.

The pipe after the product was wiped off.

The front of the pipe.

While Pipe Gel works well on surface rust, if the pipe is pitted, you will still have pit marks in the metal, the product removes rust, nothing else.

This is a great product and is now a product that I keep in my garage.

Ask your local dealer for Pipe Gel. The product is available directly from the distributor web site or from Amazon.

The tires.

Because I am relatively new to the sport of motocross, I can’t state this as a fact. Although I’ve heard tire technology has changed a fair bit over the years, there is a wide selection of off-road tires available to the public.

This is good, as we get lots of competition (Now where do we need more competition?) which pushes tire technology, and drives down tire cost for the buying public.

Taking all of this in to consideration, I began looking for a new set of tires. Being the ‘New to motocross’, ‘Spend all his money on motocross’ type of kid, I had a budget, and decided to search online. What I found sounded really good at the time, but I soon found out you get what you pay for.

Enter the Motosport.com “Artrax 125/250f” tire combo. The picture on the web site, shows a deceiving shot of a front and rear tire. When I say deceiving, I mean, the picture makes you think the back tire looks ‘beefy’. Like it could easily offer all the traction a motocross rider could want.

To my surprise, when I received my rear tire, the knobs were relatively small. I did not think much of it until I saw a friends brand new Bridgestone tire. When compared, there is a clear difference. The rubber seemed to feel like rubber (I hoped it would).

When it came to mounting the rear tire, the Chinese manufacturing comes into play. The tire shredded when I tried mounting it. While some of you may say, “Well, he is new to motocross, he did not know how to mount the thing”. I’ll admit I’m new to this mx tire mounting thing, but in this case a friend of my Dad’s, who’s mounted quite a few ‘name brand’ tires before, has NEVER seen a tire harder to mount than this Artrax .

I finally decided to bring the tire to the local Yamaha shop for mounting, and they had trouble with it as well! Once the mounting was complete, I began to worry about the wear and handling part of the tire.

The handling, well… it wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t anything amazing, you could tell the tire was of lower quality and a pro would never consider it. Wear was a different story, after only a short amount of riding time there was already noticeable tire wear. The riding done using these tires was in relatively soft terrain riding areas with absolutely no road riding.

The rear tire is just not acceptable.

Now the front tire turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Comparatively, the knobs on the front tire were acceptable and didn’t look tiny compared to a name brand tire. The tire mounted fine with the bead fitting nicely.

The front tire hooks up good in the turns with no signs of wear thus far. Overall, the front tire was a good deal. While the front tire may not be top quality, and would not be an ideal choice for a professional, this tire definitely works for the poor, ‘addicted to motocross’ 16 year olds out there.

Now what about the entire combo? Well… I just can not recommend that someone buys the combo. The rear tire just caused me way too many hassles, and didn’t really perform well. On the other hand, the front tire was very good for the price.

So, if you find your front tire a bit worn and your wallet low on funds, maybe you’ll consider the Artrax front tire. While not for your race bike, it could work great for your practice bike or as a spare. Overall it’s a good inexpensive tire.

It’s a fun simple way of of stating that you are a fan and supporter of two-strokes.

Unfortunately, there have not been many two-stroke designs to choose from – until now!

The folks over at Revanche 2 Strokes have a passion for the two-stroke that is second to none and they have created a full line of t-shirts, sweats and hoodies that show the world you’re a fan of two-strokes.

Cams Valves Headaches - front

Cams Valves Headaches - back

In fact, a t-shirt is probably the easiest and least expensive way of supporting two strokes, besides actually showing up at the races with a two stroke that is. But what about when your walking around the pits at your favorite National or Supercross? Why not show the world you are a fan.

Revanche 2 Strokes has a line-up of shirts that run the gamut from understated to over the top. Plus they are great conversation starters!

Smoke 'em

They use high quality shirts, sweats and hoodies to imprint their pro two-stroke slogans. Some of their shirts have printing on both the front and the back, which adds double the fun!

Each episode focuses on a pro motocross racer from the past. The only downside of the series? It’s limited to 22.5 minutes.

While this is certainly enough time to get a flavor of the racer and the time period they raced in, it’s not the whole story.

In the late 70's Bob Hannah was considered a Superhero.

In this particular DVD, Bob Hannah is the featured racer and 22.5 minutes is not enough time. So the producers decided to release the DVD with an “expanded” 75+ minute “show”. This comes so much closer to telling the Bob Hannah story.

But in addition they also included the Raw interview segments with Bob, but both of his early mechanics Keith McCarty and Bill Buchka. Plus some out-takes and Bob’s Roast at the “One Chance to Win” Premiere.

If you are old enough to know Bob Hannah this is a video that should be a part of your collection. But for those that don’t know much about the history of the sport or would like to see how a true champion handles himself, this is a must have.

Bob Hannah is a straight talking no-nonsense person and there are lessons to be learned for many, just by listening to how he views the world. You may not agree with everything he has to say, but he will tell you his opinion and you decide.

This is a breath of fresh air when compared to the bland and lifeless interviews given by modern day racers. Bob is the real deal and does not pull any punches.

Product Description
In 1976 a virtually unknown teenager from the high desert of Southern California began the motocross racing season on his new Yamaha with a purpose and an attitude. He would end the season with his first of seven #1 plates and a nickname…The Hurricane. Bob Hurricane Hannah took the motocross world by storm in the 70 s and 80 s with his unique, no-holds- barred riding style on the track and his matter-of-fact opinions off the track. Competitors loathed him (as he loathed them back) but everyone respected what would become one of the sport s biggest personalities and most accomplished racers of all time.

No one tells it like it is better than Bob Hannah. This DVD features many never-seen-before archival photos and film footage of Bob and other motocross legends. And what better way to celebrate than with a nice comfy chair. Of course for any right minded motocross racer that chair should have wheels and while you’re at it add a motor to move you around.

These things are so strange that they are a must have. Can you imagine having these in the man cave (some call it a garage) and holding races with your best buds?

What’s so amazing is that they are so fast! And they look so comfy.

Gas Powered La-Z-Boy At Oshkosh Flyin 2005 from Hafast on Vimeo.

The model shown in the video appears to be a two stroke!! Can you believe it you have to mix your gas and oil for your Lazy boy!

But just when you thought it couldn’t be any stranger you do a search on the Internet and find there is a company that will build you a custom chair. Yes over at Armchair Cruisers LLC you can order a custom made chair with all the options. Want a pair of high speed blenders for drinks? How about satellite radio? Or maybe you want a built in cooler for some ice cold suds?

Not only that but they are available with a choice of electric or 4 banger motors! One even comes with wheelie bars so you don’t flip your chair over. Take a moment to check out the Armchair Cruiser site just to watch the videos!! They are a hoot.

Of course, back in the “old” days, there was very little video of motocross on television or otherwise. The only place to see your heroes back then was either by attending the Nationals or Trans AMA races or photos in magazines.

History has now been updated with the release of this DVD thanks in great part to Marty’s dad Al Smith.

Al was an amateur movie camera operator and love to record his family. He recorded most of Marty’s races. Considering the technology of the day, Al did a great job. He certainly captured the essence of Marty’s career and the early days of motocross using real movie film.

All of this footage was hidden away and had never been seen before unless you were a family friend of the Smiths.

The DVD tells the story of Marty, from the early beginnings, through the ups and downs of his amazing career. It is told in an upbeat interview style with Marty, Tommy Croft, Dave Arnold, Bob Hannah, Joan and Al Smith (Marty’s parents), interspersed with racing footage and some photos. This DVD is a window into the past that offers a glimpse of a special part of motocross history.

The shots of Marty’s first race are priceless. In addition, there is footage of Marty racing and winning at Hangtown on his Monark. The next morning American Honda called to offer him a factory ride.

There is also some excellent race footage from the mid 70′s containing many of the top racers of the time.

What is truly amazing is how fast Marty could go on bikes that had less than 4 inches of travel. It almost looks like there is something wrong with the bikes, especially when you compare it to the machines of today.

When you watch closely you will discover a few very interesting facts. Marty was the first racer to ever jump a double jump! It was at Mid Ohio in 1975 aboard his 125. Then at St Pete in 1977, it appears that Marty had done a very early version of the whip over a jump. A true trailblazer.

In addition to all the exclusive race footage, there is a face to face interview with Marty and Bob Hannah that is worth the price of the DVD all by itself. For the most part, it is uncensored. It is a rare inside peak into the lives of these two great motocross champions.

There is one small drawback. You can not hear the sweet sound of the bikes. This is not an omission on anyone’s part, but due to the technology of the 1970′s. Most movie cameras back then did not have sound. In it’s place is an exciting soundtrack, that is both infectious and fun.

This is a must own video for any real fan of motocross. If you are old enough to remember these times, you will learn some new details. If you are younger and want to learn what racing was all about in the early days, this video is for you.

The set contains over 22 hours of racing and interviews from the early history of Supercross.

When this set first arrived in my home, the first DVD was inserted in the player and I was mesmerized. The hours passed so quickly that it was well past 2am before I realized that I needed to be at work in the morning. The racing is superb.

For those that are new to the sport of motocross this is a great introduction to the beginning of Motocross racing in America, specifically Supercross Racing. And for those of us old enough to have been there it is a wonderful trip down memory lane.

Please remember that these races were filmed many years ago. The production values of video has improved tremendously since the early 1970′s and 1980′s. These videos do capture the spirit and excitement of when motocross was a new sport.

During the course of these videos what is most apparent is the determination of the racers as they learn a new sport.

What is truly interesting is how much faster the racers of old looked. This is not to say that the racers of today are slow, not by any means. The racers of today have learned so much by studying these old racers and by appling new techniques. Today’s racers are super smooth and controlled in comparison to the racers of yesterday.

Each one of us can remember that intoxicating first ride on a motocross bike. When we first began we struggled to learn how to control our machines and learn to ride faster. These videos are similar to our middle years of learning.

We must also take into account that the machines of the day were not as sophisticated as today’s machines. But an interesting change occurs as you watch these videos. Right before your very eyes you can observe the technology advance and the machines look more and more like the machines we have today. The truly amazing part of motocross history is how quickly that change occurred.

Some of my favorite highlights include Marty Smith saying he was going to take it easy, because he didn’t want to get hurt and less than five minutes later he is cartwheeling down the track after missing the first turn.
