Thanks, Sachs! Two things I have planned for the mighty 490 are to have the crank balanced and do the head mod. I wonder if I should have a head mod done to me as I blubber and detonate when I riding my mountain bike...LOL!!!

Motoman465, Yamahas are the simplest two strokes to work on (usually no transmission shims or anything).Remove the cylinder and head as one unit.Pull the flywheel and remove all the center case screws from one side.Use a case seperation tool to carefully split the cases and extract the crank. While the cases are seperated, wrap some masking tape around the trans, shift drum and forks etc. so that everything stays put.You can leave the transmission, clutch and everything else in one case halve.Reverse to assemble.Make sure you contact Super Hunky for the head-mod information (otherwise the YZ490 will blubber and detonate).

As soon as Motoman465 leaves the shop here's what happens:

I usually SMASH the cases apart with a LARGE ball peen hammer that I usually use to adjust the attitude of my Doberman or unruly customers then get the one half of the case and climb a 6 foot ladder and fire the case half at a big rock I have in the shop, after that the crank from the engine that is already blown up really bad just falls out of the shards of remaining aluminum...................

..........Oh wait that the method for 4 strokes!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry someone's gotta fix 4 junks and get paid for it, but my money is well invested on my 2 stroke toys... Braaapppp!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for these aricles, Dogger! I recently purchased an '89 YZ490 and I was hoping to have it ready for this season, but the economy had other plans for me. I can now take my time to get it ready for next season. One of the things I now want to do is pull the crank and have it balanced. I see my friend pull engines apart, fix them, and put them back together like nothing and I want to know how to do it. I have never torn into the bottom end of a motor.
