Hey Twostrokemotocross,
You know what would be a great story for you to publish? One dedicated to dyno charts. Put on comparison charts with different bikes on the same chart to compare 2-stroke power to 4-stroke power.

For example make a CR500/KX500 vs 380sx vs 450F dyno, a 300xc vs CRF450X vs 525xc dyno, a yz250/250sx vs 250F dyno, a 250xc vs 250xc-f dyno, CR500/KX500 vs XR650 and any others. Those would be great for comparison to prove that 2-strokes not only make much more power but make as much lower end power. Especially cc vs cc.
You could also show weight and hp/lb.

In the meantime here is a video of my new KTM 380SX! It's my first ride and first video so not great yet.

Jody is good at making words look good on paper and that's about it. No way is a 450cc 4 stroke an open class bike. Not even close.

Wonder what a modern 500 would be like? And i'm not talking about a Service Honda using old engine technology (not to belittle SH's great bikes). I mean a from-the-ground-up-new 500 from one of the japanese manufacturers. As light as a 250F with double the torque of a 450F? A bike like that, with the right rider, would eat a 4 stroke for lunch and sh*t the remains out its stinger!

Makes no sense to me either, the prime reason I used to attend the MX events was to watch the big, totally too much power 500's wrestle around the track . There were riders not that long ago who could manage these beasts and it was fun watching them. Took my '04 KX500 out recently to a club day event and had so many younger guys drooling over it. The 450's and other 4 strokes are too loud, too unexiting and two slow for me = boring, hence why I don't bother going to watch any more ....glad I got managed to ' Bank manager' my way into scoring the last of the big CR's into my account, still wrapped in cotton wool, cheers

One thing I always said helped to drive more nails into the 500 2 stroke's coffin was the popularity of Supercross. To the Average Joe Supercross was more exciting to watch and you could sit in the stands near the restrooms and concession stands. I guess this could be filed under the AMA. Just my opinion. I really miss the 500 2 stroke and will continue to ride mine as long as I am able to kick the beast over! LOL!

Open class being alive to me relates to how it works here in the UK MCF Motocross Pro Open class - which has no restrictions whatsoever on engine size or type, so if you wanna race a Service CR / KX 500cc two stroke then thats allowed. How can they call it an open class if its not open to any bike? Thats just retarded

Yes... this article was published back in the May 2009 issue of Motocross Action.

I typed out because a few folks were asking about what happened to the 500's.

As for the quote. “The good news: The open bike isn’t dead-it’s heart still beats-except that it now goes thump.”

If taken in the context of the entire article and not as a separate comment, it is saying that the very same manufacturers that "killed" the 500 two-stroke are the very ones that have been pushing the 450cc four-stroke. They've just set it up so that the four-stroke has a huge displacement advantage.

At least that's how I interpreted it!

This article came out way back in the summer. I think it was around july or august because right after this article was the article for the Service Kawi KX500AF.
