250 Two Stroke vs. 250 Four Stroke – Pro Race Wildwood NJ
With all the debate raging over the loss of the opportunity to see the Pro Racers compete head-to-head on 250′s, it’s great to see an actual race with very fast Expert/Pro racers competing on those very same machines. That’s right, let’s leave all the conjecture and seat of the pants guessing and watch an actual competition between the 250F and the 250 two-stroke.
This past weekend in Wildwood, NJ the Thunder in the Sand event was held on the beach, in the shadow of the Boardwalk and Amusement Park.
The race surface consists of deep beach sand, although in some spots the sand is quite hard-packed.
Thunder in the Sand is an AMA sanctioned event, so the 250A class actually consists of machines that are 250cc in size. It also means that the 250 two-stroke gets to compete head-to-head with the 250 four-stroke.
In the video below, keep an eye out for #49 Dakota Kessler, who is the son of former factory star Mickey Kessler. Just watching the way Dakota powers that 250 Honda two-stroke around the deep sand track sends shivers down the spine.
Watch and enjoy.

The cool part about two-strokes is that it's easy to change lines and get on the gas. Photo by Matt Wozney MXPTV.com
So what do you think? Are the two different stroked machines closely matched or is one so much better than the other?

Amazing. Especially since that CR250 is a bike that hasn’t been developed in 10 years. That 10 year old technology beating brand new “superior” technology.

The best way I can describe this awesome battle…
4 stroke – Clobbering through the sand like a truck.
2 stroke – Railing around on top of the sand with cat like agility.
Looked like the 1/8th ton 450′s wore #9 and 808 down by the end. They jumped a couple of berms. 48, 1:19 and 2:43 are classic! I guess that 37 extra pounds needs a little more “mass centralizing”! lol
The CR250 of #49 was on top of the sand all the way to the end. The turns and the whoops are where it’s at.
BRAAAP!

Hey Scooter042, those are not 450 F’s they are 250 F’s. It is an AMA sanctioned amateur event that allows the 250 two-stroke to compete with the 250F’s
Although I agree the four-stroke racers were probably trying a bit harder not to let the Honda two-stroke beat them and missed some of the corners! LOL

Looks fair to me! 250 vs 250. Would love to see it for the Supercross and national pros. I’m sure alot of people would.
I wonder what year of CR that is, def not newer than ’07. Seems stock too, at least the exhaust is. Wonder what years second place and beyond is, and what mods were done to those. Still, seems like a fair race. Keesler was riding his but off, honest victory-250 vs 250. Thanks for posting that.

Oops. I guess I’ll have to actually read the article and pay attention next time. lol
Well, those 250F’s were still pounding the sand pretty hard. Kessler made that smoker look light. I would hate to see how bad a 450 with the extra tonnage would have bulldozed.
That was an awesome battle. It gives everyone something to cheer for.

I guess that CR250 does have a Pro Circuit system on it. Sounds nice.

Everyone at the Big Four, the AMA, and anybody associated with pro racing should be made to sit down and watch this video over and over and over again. Strap ‘em to a chair, tape their eyes open and crank up the volume!!! When an even playing field exists, the four jokes don’t stand a chance!!! BRRRRAAAAAAPPPPPPP!!!! Nuff said!!!!!

Congrats to Dakota. Excuse my ignorance about 4-strokes, but when the second place bike sounded like it was missing, was that the “rev-limiter” in effect? It sounded like the thing was going to self destruct any second.

Hey Sdcaro, yes what you re hearing is a 250F “bouncing” off the rev limiter.
While it’s been stated so many times before, if your an average racer, you will not rev your bike quite that high. But, if you keep your ears open, when you hear Experts or Pro racers, most of them are revving the bikes up to the rev limiter. This is what puts the extreme stress on the motor, that results in the engines going BOOM!
Unfortunately, that is the only way to get the maximum power out of the four-strokes. And the reason that so many would like to have a fair choice between the two.
